Shippen Manor: Explore Warren History Trail

History Trail

Shippen Manor will be a participating site and open to visitors on Sunday, November 3, 2024 (10 am to 4 pm).

The museum will have self-guided tours with Civil War displays. Docents will be available to speak with visitors.

27th NJ pic

Outside, we will have Co. F, 27th NJ Baileys Boys visiting with us. They will be positioned along the lower drive and porch. Firing demonstrations are dependent upon the weather that day and if it is a nice day, they will do their firing demonstration between 12 pm and 3 pm for our visitors.

The 27th NJ (Civil War) was recruited from various towns in Morris and Sussex Counties (NJ) and mustered into service on 3 Sept 1862 in Newark and trained at Camp Frelinghuysen in Newark before joining the Army of the Potomac. The regiment was mustered out on 2 July 1863. Many veterans of the 27th NJ went to serve in other regiments, most notably the 33rd NJ Infantry (Col. George W. Mindil) and the 39th NJ Volunteer Infantry. Co. F was led by Captain Daniel Bailey.

Postcard 221 Colonial Methodist Church

The Colonial United Methodist Church of Oxford will also be giving tours from 12 pm to 4 pm and selling light fare in their lower level community room.

O
riginally a grist mill, the structure was built in 1813 by (David) Morris Robeson, grandson of Jonathan (builder of the furnace), but there may have been an earlier structure on the site. It is positioned next to our historic colonial-era furnace (c. 1741-1884). The church purchased the old mill in 1913.

The Valentine Family, who lived at Shippen during the Empire Steel & Iron years (1911-early 1920s), were members of this church.

This is a family-friend, free event. The Friends of Shippen do accept cash donations. All monies collected are used for the museum.

Please note that since this is traditionally are busiest day, our driveways and back parking will be closed to vehicle traffic. The small Belvidere Ave. lot will be reserved only for folks with handicap tags/plates as it is in close proximity to the boardwalk that leads to the museum entrances. We are asking that all visitors who are able, please park in town (see map) and walk over.
